How can increasing lean meat percentage be worthwhile at this time?

Sales prices are high and amino acid prices low, which means it makes sense to focus on the last 10% of productivity and unexploited potential. It's worthwhile thinking about increasing the amino acid profile for young pigs and finishers. Feed consumption per kg daily gain, a figure that has been gently falling over the last few years, points in the same direction. If feed consumption is lower than 2.75 FUsv per kg daily gain, increasing the amino acid profile will usually make sense.

To increase the profile from 7.7 g digestible lysine up to e.g. 8.4 g will cost around 1 € per finisher produced in extra feed cost (protein and the other amino acids have to be increased correspondingly).

Given the current price ratios, no major changes in productivity are needed before achieving a better gross margin.

For UK pigs and special production – for which the norm for amino acids is higher – the same applies.

Given the current price, which does seem likely to continue for a while, there are grounds to increase the amino acid/protein level.
