Feed for finishers

At Vilomix’ 40th anniversary our Senior Nutritionist from Denmark Jens Svendgaard made a talk on “Feeding pigs in 20 minutes”.

23 years of experience with feed consultancy gives our Senior Nutritionist from Denmark Jens Svendgaard expert knowledge when it comes to what works in herds.

You can now read the main points and recommendations Jens makes for sows.

Finishers – feeding according to efficiency
The better the feed conversion rate, the less feed needed per pig. Consequently, productivity can be improved by increasing the amino acid profile to fulfil the needs of the pig optimally, thus improving productivity.

Mixture 1*

Feed mixture 1 is designed for production of finishers with a feed efficiency of 2.75 FE/kg growth or above. Because the pigs eat a high number of feed units during the growth period, they need fewer amino acids (7.7 g. st. dig. lysine/FE), digestible crude protein (123 g/FE) and phosphorus (2.4 g/FE) per feed unit to cover their needs.

Mixture 2*

Feed mixture 2 is designed for production of finishers with a feed efficiency of between 2.6-2.75 FE/kg growth. These pigs eat a high number of feed units during the growth period and hence need fewer amino acids (8.0 g. st. dig. lysine/FE), digestible crude protein (125 g/FE) and phosphorus (2.5 g/FE) per feed unit to cover their needs.

Mixture 3*

Feed mixture 3 is designed for production of finishers with a feed efficiency of 2.6 FE/kg growth or under. Because these pigs eat fewer feed units during the growth period, they need more amino acids (8.4 g. st. dig. lysine/FE), digestible crude protein (128 g/FE) and phosphorus (2.6 g/FE) per feed unit to cover their needs.

The price for mixture 3 is €0.004 more expensive per FE in this example, but there is an improved feed efficiency of 0.15 FE lower per kg growth. This gives a higher gross margin of €1.75 per finisher (9 FE saved from 30-110 kg x €0.19 per FE). Furthermore, higher growth is expected, which gives a higher slaughter weight or more batches through the unit per year. At a time when prices have never been higher, improving efficiency has even greater value.

On the other hand, using a higher amino acid profile than that strictly needed for feed efficiency is a minor expense.

If you experience problems in your finisher housing section, we will be happy to discuss your herd with you.
