The quality of grain in the bottom of the silos

Published: 2023-05-31

When the silos are emptied, there is a higher proportion of damaged grain and impurities, which are most susceptible to microbial growth. Additionally, there is often an elevated level of toxins and soil bacteria. It could be a combination of the above factors, but it could also be one thing that's causing more trouble than another.

If there is an increased occurence of abortions, lack of estrus, red/swollen vulva, decreased milk production (flacid udder), or delayed rectum, it is a clear sign of elevated toxin levels, and it would be advisable to add a toxin binder for a period to alleviate the problem.

Vilomix recommends adding the feed additive X-Bond Premium at a rate of one kg/ts of feed. X-Bond Premium can also be added to your mineral mix. It costs approximately 44 DKK (6,33 USD or 5,91 EUR) per sow per year if added to the mineral mix throughout the year.

On the other hand, if you experience increased mortality due to gasping pigs, it is more likely that soil bacteria are at play. In that situation, it would be better to add a probiotic like Bioplus YC or Bactocell. Adding probiotics costs around 3,4 øre/FU (0.05 USD or 0.05 EUR) to use. The same applies to the addition of X-Bond Premium. Adding a combination of toxin binder and probiotics ensures maximum security so the remaining grain in the silo does not cause production issues.
